Above the bench is a framed mosaic that reads “peace”. Nicosia is the last divided capital in Europe, split between the northern Turkish Cypriot and southern Greek Cypriot communities. Following the war, the division of the island became permanent in 1974. Strict border controls remained in place until 2003. Today, there are nine checkpoints across the island. Cyprus has a vast and complicated history. The island was administered by Britain from 1878 until it gained independence as a republic in 1960. British colonial rule historically managed ethnic divisions by institutionalising separation between communities, which later contributed to instability and conflict. To this day, the United Nations Peacekeeping Force patrols and manages the “buffer zone”. There are many remnants of British colonialism across the island. Most prominently, the UK maintains two Sovereign Base Areas, Akrotiri and Dhekelia. Strategically located close to the Middle East, the bases were also targeted by Iranian missiles earlier in 2026. Public infrastructure on the island is heavily influenced by Britain. The motorway signage immediately recalls that of the UK. Cypriots drive on the left, and even the electrical sockets are the familiar three-pronged British type. For many people, these continuing ties to Britain are complicated and contradictory. “Peace” Bench is presented here as one of the British brown “historical attraction” motorway signs. I make work that takes many forms and finds its way into all kinds of places - from public art, murals and illustration to collage, painting, and research collaborations. My work is rooted in bringing art into unexpected spaces and creating opportunities for people to encounter, make and experience art in new ways. Since 2025 I have represented myself as my agent, Anika. She has become an advocate for the arts as well as sustainable travel in Bristol. She went viral for her video about the new entrance of Temple Meads station! I have an interest in road signage (Margaret Calvert fan here), chair design and cycle paths that make sense. I would love to be commissioned to design a zebra crossing one day.I have made queer condoms and heartbreak repair kits for cyclists. I also tried to be a travelling puppeteer once, which didn’t work out. I’m not afraid to try something new, though it does scare me a bit. My creative process often starts with scissors and paper-cut collage. I also use inks, paints, pens and my scanner to mix analogue with digital. I’m the artist behind the Bristol Beacon rebrand and the founder of Bristol Mural Collective. Socially engaged work is important to me. I have worked with prisoners, at-risk teenagers, school children and community art groups. I care about showing the breadth of an experience. This means making space for the more difficult stories and emotions as well.&nbsp;I’ve lived in Amsterdam and the Bay Area, and currently work fromCentrespace Studios, Bristol UK. It is the oldest creative co-operative in the city. I'll then send a proposal covering the brief, timeline, outputs, revisions, usage rights, and costs.
